{"id":295,"date":"2020-12-19T10:12:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-19T10:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.the-smile-centre.com\/news\/?p=295"},"modified":"2021-05-12T13:22:46","modified_gmt":"2021-05-12T13:22:46","slug":"smoking-oral-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.the-smile-centre.com\/news\/smoking-oral-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Smoking &#038; Oral Health"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Doctors, dentists\nand scientists have known for decades that smoking has negative effects on your\ngeneral and oral health \u2013 yet many patients still struggle to kick the habit,\nand some are unaware just how dangerous smoking is for your health and\nwellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this post, our expert dentists, based at our dental practice near Bodmin, share some\nreasons why smoking is bad for your oral health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.<strong>Gum disease<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s one of the big reasons we always advise our patients to quit \u2013 they\u2019re putting themselves at risk of developing inflamed gums, which can lead to gum disease and ultimately, periodontitis. This serious problem degrades gum and bone while leaving teeth loose and at danger of falling out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.<strong>Oral cancer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of us associate smoking and cancer without thinking of which types it\u2019s connected to. Some of our patients haven\u2019t even heard of oral cancer, which means they won\u2019t know the signs to look for. Luckily, our dentists can help identify oral cancer during routine check-ups, which is one of the reasons we ask our patients to visit our practice at least once a year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.<strong>Staining<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although not specifically an oral health concern on the surface, staining on the teeth can actually weaken the enamel, which means you\u2019re likely to experience sensitivity and may also develop cavities. The enamel is the tooth\u2019s protective layer, so by keeping it clean and well looked-after, you\u2019re helping the health of your smile, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.<strong>Poor healing response<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p> There may be cases you need your mouth, teeth or gums to heal quickly following a procedure \u2013 but smoking can affect wound healing. For example, in the case of dental implants, you won\u2019t be able to have the crown part of the implant fitted until the root has healed properly and adhered to the underlying jaw bone. Smoking can also affect the success rate of dental implants, which makes sense, given that it can lead to gum disease, and eventual deterioration of the gum and jaw bone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What about other types of smoking?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p> Whether you smoke cigarettes, cigars, pipes, recreational drugs or a vape, there can be serious consequences for your oral health. There have even been studies that show that chewing tobacco can be detrimental, being associated with oral cancer.
